“Africa is a continent full of death and destruction,” “The AIDS epidemic is wiping out Africans,” “African people are uncivilized and do not know how to take care of themselves or their countries.” These are only a few of the negative stereotypes of Africa and its people that you might hear on a daily basis. On an ordinary day at work, I checked my email and read some of the AOL news stories being featured. On December 27, 2007, Kenyan citizens went to the polls to elect their new president. President Mwai Kibaki, the incumbent, ran against candidate Raila Odinga. The votes were tallied, and after what is believed to be a deeply flawed count, Kibaki was declared the winner. Opposition leader Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic movement (ODM) and supporters of the party argue that the election results were rigged in favor of Kibaki. “The essence of democracy is that the people have a choice of who they want to choose and that the majority wins As a leader, one must accept defeat even though it may have been in an unjust way,” said Natasha Gikunju, a senior actuarial Science major who was born and raised in Kenya.

If you stepped on Towson’s campus 20 years ago, you would have noticed that something was missing...figuratively speaking, you could say that Towson was a place not representative of the human ‘colors of the rainbow.’ There was something that the university lacked which was blatantly obvious. If you guessed diversity, you guessed right. However, since that time, Towson University has taken on a new face. The university has been committed to making the campus more representative of the different colors of humanity. While Towson is a long way from being the most diverse university in the nation, it has taken a step in the direction or multiculturalism.

So why do you think these chemicals make us sick and addicted? The truth is the more we get sick the more money the producers make. We must realize that there are less harmful options in the world and one of the places to find these natural medications is in the continent of Africa. |
