In the month of February, people gather across the nation to celebrate Black History Month. Black History Month is a period for reflection and acknowledgement of the innumerable accomplishments that blacks have made throughout history. “Black History” can never be contained or defined by a mere month. The accomplishments of our ancestors, of men and women such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Ben Carson and others should not only be celebrated in one month only to be forgotten and disregarded the other 11 months in a year. It is imperative that black history be taught and acknowledged throughout the year in our classrooms, at our jobs and in our communities for black history is a way of life. When we celebrate black history we must make a conscious effort to remember the place where blacks first thrived, prospered and made ‘history’ on a daily basis; Africa. From Queen Nefertiti to Nelson Mandela, black people have changed the world in which we live in. |
